Crepes & Countryside
The Skinny Pancake is both a crêperie and a new visual-arts venue in the Lake and College building in Burlington. Its first art show of 2008 is Gregory Albright’s “Imaginary Landscapes.” On his website, the Hartland artist says, “I am exploring nature as personified in all of its wonderful, lusty and terrible expressions through the landscape.” Albright’s variations on that theme are colorful and nicely simplified. The show runs until February 15. Pictured: “Ascutney From Cornish.”

Recent Poetry.
Vineyard Winter
Leaden wind rings buoy bells.
Sands sift through garden gates
Frost kissed bud kept
Hopes in petals wrapt
Mullion cut light beckons day
From dark mists answering
Whispering thistles playing
Shining lantern light
Against picket staff
Dappled dewdrops dangle delicately
Not unlike blood until
A sharp shot drops
The bullock to bended haunch
Knife quarters quivering
Muscle meat for winter’s sustenance.

New work from the shop
Saturday, January 12, 2008
Today was our first day with out a model, and it went well for those that could come. There was a nice mood of mutual support, and advice. We discovered how handy builder's laser level is for checking the verticallity of a pose. We had a near-consensus to take up a male torso in the next weeks, given the generous offer of a model tentitively on the 26th. Perhaps we can pull this off in one session, although reviewing that plan might be a good idea. There is now a little plastic skeleton, and Elizabeth gave us a mini lesson and demonstration of the scapula angle as it slides out over the ribs when the arm is brought above the head. I extracted a nice casting of Jim's head. Richard, Elizabeth and I all adjusted the armatured nude from last series. Jim got his start on a rabbit.

ok, so these are for sale. They are for children to play with while their parents really iron...does that actually happen?
Wooden iron (Ancient Greek: σιδηροξύλον sideroxylon, German: hölzernes Eisen) is a polemical term often used in philosophic rhetoric to describe the impossibility of an opposing argument. The term is a German proverbial oxymoron, which synthesizes the concept of the "wooden", which is organic, with the concept of "iron" which is inorganic. Such a contradictio in adjecto is a logical inconsistency. It occurs when a modifying adjective opposes its noun, as in "square circle," "freezing fire," "boiling snow," or "hard liquid."

I designed and then built two of these in my workshop, with the idea that the extra one might help me cover the designing. I sold one to a school teacher, who wanted to keep her collection of children's books safe and organized. I am making all kinds of furniture one piece after another, hoping that the shop won't get too full. This piece will just cover that unexpected trip to the doctor, and a few more boards for another cell phone table I got going. Some people think that the Shakers made furniture the way they did for style, but actually, when you see what they had to work with, they made each piece to be durable and simple, each element contributing to its functionality. I think if the shakers had a router, or prefabricated parts, they would have as gracefully integrated these as I do now. It seems that to replicate the Shaker furniture goes against what they would have done, were they working today. New Pine hutch 80 inches high, 34 inches wide. Adjustable 10 inch shelves above an 18 inch counter, drawer and 2 doors. Two adjustable shelves in Cabinet 16 inches deep. Solid brass mortice hinges and ball catches; wooden drawer slides...(this drawer would not probably get opened thrice daily like a silverware drawer). Heirloom quality, proportioned using the golden section. I can deliver this in VT, for a little gas money. (Is 'little gas money' an oxymoron?) gregory
